Open Water Wisdom
The Lifesaving Society is Canada’s lifeguarding expert and has a long history in drowning prevention through lifesaving training programs and Water Smart® public education. The Society continues to provide Canadians with the research, education and tools to help keep them safe when participating in water based activities.
In an effort to reduce drowning and water related injury, the Lifesaving Society and Canadian Red Cross partnered in 2012 to deliver the Open Water Wisdom Campaign. The campaign provided educational materials for use in community-led campaigns aimed at children and youth ages 0-19 who were involved in sport, recreation and active play on or near open water.
The Open Water Wisdom campaign provided educational kits (including a Knowledge and Activity Guide, posters, flyers and ad templates) and a supply of comfortable lifejackets in a range of sizes to participating communities across Canada.
We are reaching out to remote communities not normally served by ongoing water safety and learn to swim programs, but who may have local individuals or groups who would be able to lead some awareness activity if they had the right tools. We know too that communities have local knowledge about their particular water environments and have a unique perspective on their needs.
As affiliates, partners and members of the Lifesaving Society, we are asking for your help in making your community and networks aware of the available resources online. The campaign materials may be downloaded and incorporated into your own activity or to enhance your sports or recreation program.
